Diabetic Foot Care

September 10, 2019

Diabetes is often associated with diabetes foot conditions. If you have diabetes, at the office of Active Ankle and Foot Care Specialist, we can help you maintain good foot health and protect against infection.

If you have diabetes, you may be prone to diabetic-related foot conditions that can be serious if left untreated. As part of your healthcare regimen, it’s important to see a podiatrist regularly to screen for diabetic foot ulcers and help you maintain healthy feet.

For patients with diabetes, it can be harder to feel a foot injury or wound due to poor circulation to the feet. When foot injuries go undetected, they can become infected and lead to more serious issues. That’s why it’s important to be conscientious about your foot health.

Diabetic Foot Care Checklist

There are a number of preventive foot care actions you can take to reduce the risk of serious infection that may affect people with diabetes. These include:

  • Monitor your feet regularly to look for signs of a problem such as blisters, redness, swelling or nail problems.
  • Practice good foot hygiene. Keep your feet clean by washing or soaking them in warm water daily.
  • Keep your skin hydrated by using a moisturizer on your feet everyday.
  • Wear shoes or slippers to prevent a foot injury when outdoors or indoors.
  • Keep your feet cool and not sweaty. Using an antiperspirant on the soles of the feet can help.
  • Check your shoes for any foreign objects that may be stuck there before you putting them on.
  • Keep your feet warm at night by wearing socks.
  • Keep your diabetes in control.
  • Schedule regular foot exams.
