Choose Your Shoes Wisely

February 27, 2023

Most people pick their footwear based on need and comfort. Other folks, however, make their decisions based on style much more than how well they fit. The chances are good that those folks’ feet don’t appreciate it. Ill-fitting footwear can easily incite problems with feet, ankles and posture.

The office of Active Ankle and Foot Care Specialist is an expert in the field of podiatry. We will gladly give you as much time as you need to ask questions and tell us about any of your concerns. You will receive clear explanations regarding your treatment options. Our main objective is to keep your feet happy and healthy.

This primer on footwear options will ward off potential problems.

Instead of high heels: Your metatarsal bones will love it if you wear heels that don’t exceed 2 inches. The lower the heel, the closer your feet are to their natural positions. Have you ever heard of performance pumps? They are fashionable and keep your foot health in mind. They’re also sturdy, comfy and don’t squish your toes.

Instead of stilettos: Your weight rests on two tiny areas, so they’re great if you want to risk spraining an ankle or tripping. Opt for chunky heels. Your weight distribution will be significantly steadier.

Instead of flimsy shoes (flip flops, ballet shoes, etc.): Show each foot’s plantar fascia some love. The plantar fascia is a strip of tissue that progresses along the bottom of the foot. It pulls on the heel to aid in walking and performs most efficiently with shoes with good arch support. Shoes that lack good arch support can inflame, tear or overload plantar fascia. Insufficient arch support can result in extreme heel pain. If you can’t part with your beloved ballet shoes, a podiatrist can prescribe orthotics that alleviate mild foot pain and supplement cushioning.

Instead of platform shoes and wedges: These rigid foot beds of these classics can put the kibosh on your natural stride, especially if the heel is a lot higher than the toe. If you’re stuck on platforms and wedges, wear ones whose soles are almost parallel to the ground.

Active Ankle and Foot Care Specialist is dedicated to providing premium foot care. For more information, please don’t hesitate to call us today for an appointment.
